#BeWellUGA and Learn About…Managing Stress: A Wellness Lifestyle Approach

August 29, 2019September 29, 2022 #beWellUGA, mental wellness

Give yourself “money in the bank” when it comes to preventing stress by adopting a wellness lifestyle approach to stress management.

Let’s face it…stress is a part of life. But the healthier you are, the better able you will be to manage stress when it happens.

The following components are part of a Wellness Lifestyle Approach that can give you the energy you need to handle stress when it happens:

  • Attitude: The way you think about things can make all the difference in how you react to events.
  • Healthy Eating: Good nutrition and healthy eating habits can help you through stressful times by increasing your physical, mental, and emotional stamina.
  • Physical Activity: Benefits include immediate stress relief as well as long-term stress management by giving you more energy, helping you put things in perspective, improving your mood, sharpening your mental productivity, and boosting your self-confidence.
  • Relaxing Your Mind & Body: Relaxation techniques can help you manage stress and improve your concentration, productivity, and overall well-being.
  • Sleep: Consistent sleep is critical for a healthy life and affects everything from our immune system to our ability to learn and remember information.
  • Healthy Relationships: Talking with a supportive friend or family member can be helpful in coping with stress.
  • Time Management: Learning how to be a good time manager can make work, play, and studying more manageable, more productive, and less stressful.
  • Alcohol & Other Drugs: High-risk use can lead to poor decision-making, impaired abstract thinking, injury, and legal problems. Make healthier choices by understanding your overall risks.
  • Tobacco: Usage can impact your sleep, ability to fight infection, and your overall health.
  • Money Management: Finances are commonly stressful for college students–following a budget and being smart about credit cards will help reduce stress.
  • Spirituality: Finding personal meaning in your life by exploring spirituality may be helpful in managing stress.

There are many things we can do to help reduce and even prevent some of the problems caused by stress.

The UGA Health Center (UHC) wants to support you in succeeding and enjoying your experience at UGA. Experts at UHC offer knowledge and programs concerning stress management and college life.
