How to Protest Safely During COVID-19

July 2, 2020April 9, 2024 #beWellUGA, health promotion, health topics

The UHC Health Promotion Department’s work is grounded in a harm reduction framework. Through the harm reduction model, we equip students to make informed decisions about their own health and safety. The following information utilizes the harm reduction model to empower our UGA community to safely engage with public protests and demonstrations if they choose to. You can see more harm reduction in action by requesting a virtual presentation for your office, student group, or next group meeting.

Planning Ahead

1. If you or a member of your household is at elevated risk for harm from COVID-19, let that guide your decision making. Are there other avenues available to you to make your voice heard? If you do still choose to engage, what additional precautionary steps might you take to keep your household safe?

2. Be sure to tell people you trust where you will be. Consider writing down their phone numbers and keeping them in your pocket in case your phone dies while you’re there; you could also write these numbers directly onto your hand or arm.

3. Pack your bag with:

  • Face mask
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Bottled water
  • Snacks to sustain your energy
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen lotion
  • Basic first-aid kit

While You’re There

1.  Wear your face mask at all times and avoid touching your face.

2.  Maintain CDC recommendations for 6-feet of social distancing wherever possible.

3.  Listen to your body. Drink water, eat a snack, and find a place to sit when you need it.

Once You’re Home

1.  Wash your clothes, take a shower, and disinfect your belongings as soon as possible to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

2.  It is possible to spread COVID-19 without showing any symptoms. If you think you may have it, the CDC recommends a 14-day self-quarantine.

3.  If you have any symptoms, call the UHC at 706.542.1162 to make an appointment to get tested.

These harm-reduction tips were adapted and compiled from lists created by NAACP at UT Austin, Frontline Medics, and Students for Sensible Drug Policy.
