Dr. Martha Dannenbaum is the Executive Director of the University Health Center at The University of Georgia. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University (BA-Biology) and the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio (MD), with a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology completed at the University of Oklahoma. She is Board Certified by the American Board of OB/Gyn (ABOG) and was in private practice as an OB/Gyn in Tulsa, Oklahoma for 15 years. She is currently licensed to practice medicine in Georgia, Texas, and Oklahoma. Prior to coming to UGA, she spent 17 years at Texas A&M University Student Health Services, with the last 15 of those years in the role of Director. Dr. Dannenbaum is passionate about innovative quality improvement work focused on holistic student well-being.

Dr. Sara (Beth) Smith-Thompson came to the Health Center in September 2006. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Before joining the UHC staff, she was in private practice in Winchester, Tennessee. Dr. Smith-Thompson is the lead physician in the Gynecology Clinic.

Dr. Gary Glasser joined the Health Center in October 2014 after 15 years of private practice as an obstetrician and gynecologist in Atlanta. He served on the faculty of Emory University in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics from 1992-2005. He volunteers as a lecturer for Atlanta elementary and middle schools on sun safety and puberty. Dr. Glasser has published numerous papers on subjects relating to women’s health, and has made a number of presentations at regional and national conferences on contraception and breast health. Dr. Perry joined the UHC staff in 2021 after practicing OB/GYN, then Gynecology for 26 years in Athens. She is a member of clinical faculty of the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership as a volunteer preceptor in surgery and ambulatory GYN. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia OB/GYN Society since 2005, and serves as President for 2021-2022. Dr. Perry also volunteers as a physician at Mercy Health Clinic, serving uninsured and underserved patients to provide gynecologic care and consultation. She enjoys serving as an educator for Girology, a group which provides age-appropriate education and information about development, reproduction, sexuality and general health for girls ages 8 and up.

Dr. Bradford Upchurch is manager of the pharmacy having joined the UHC staff in 2007. He earned a BSPharm at UGA and a PharmD at the University of Florida. Dr. Jodi Kearney joined the UHC staff in 2011 and is the assistant manager of the pharmacy. She completed her undergraduate courses at Georgia Southern University and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy with her PharmD in 2001. Jodi also holds APhA Immunization Certification and Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.

Dr. Andy Smith is the manager of the Physical Therapy Department at the University Health Center. His areas of interest include movement/functional-based evaluation and assessment; the role of functional training in injury prevention and wellness; the role of pain neuroscience education in treating persistent pain; the role of postural dysfunction and repetitive tissue microtrauma on chronic/recurrent pain syndromes; spinal, peripheral joint and soft tissue mobilization/manipulation/dry needling; and the role of nutrition, mental health, cardiovascular health, and sleep health on management of overall wellness and integrative health.

Cody joined the UHC PT team in 2021. He began working in physical therapy as a Physical Therapist Assistant in 2014 at Southeast Alabama Neurological Rehabilitation and Balance Center. Since then, he has enjoyed working in orthopedics and aquatic physical therapy. Dr. Nidhi Patel is a physical therapist who joined UHC in 2018. After receiving her Doctorate of Physical Therapy she trained with the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute. Her areas of interest include pelvic floor rehabilitation (including bowel, bladder and sexual dysfunction) , chronic pain related to musculoskeletal dysfunctions, spinal rehab. She enjoys treating through a combination of manual therapy based approaches, pain neuroscience education and movement based treatments. She specializes in pelvic health techniques that include external/internal assessment and treatment for bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction. She is a post natal fitness specialist and certified in trigger point dry needling. She also helps educate other physical therapists interested in pelvic floor PT by acting as a teaching assistant through the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute.

Mr. Henry Pursner joined the Health Center staff in 2011 and has been a physical therapist since 1995. His special areas of expertise include treatment of the fitness athlete with a specialization in running-related injuries, the spine, extremities, and cranio-facial pain. Extensive training in health coaching as well as treatment of persistent pain which combines exercise as well as lifestyle changes such as relaxation/ mindfulness practices. Past work experience included working in Silicon Valley treating computer-related injuries, sports medicine, and chronic pain patients.

Jason brought his “A” game to the University Health Center in the Fall of 2019. His dedication to clinical excellence, to the field of physical therapy, and to each one of his patients are what drives his purpose as a professional. His primary area of interest lies in helping the active population return to sport and recreation after suffering sport-related injuries. Additionally, he finds great value and enjoyment helping people dealing with chronic or persistent pain through a careful approach, an active plan of care, and an emphasis on education to ensure lasting results. His extensive experience in health, fitness, and wellness gives him a broad perspective as a physical therapist and allows him to create specific and personalized experiences for each patient.

Dr. Finbar (Barry) Woitalla joined the University Health Center in January 2018. He previously practiced as a primary care physician at Baumholder Army Garrison, Germany providing care for U.S. Army soldiers and their families from April 2015 – December 2017. Prior to that he worked at United Regional Physicians Group as a Sports Medicine/Non-operative orthopedics provider and as a primary care physician at Kell West Family Practice both in Wichita Falls, TX. Dr. Woitalla loves spending time with his wife, two young boys and German Shepherd. He also enjoys playing and listening to all kinds of music and taking in sporting events.

Lindsey Niknezhad joined Medical Clinic Blue in August 2021. Lindsey grew up in the North Georgia mountains and came to Athens in 2008 as an undergraduate. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She later obtained a Master of Physician Assistant Studies at August University in Augusta, Georgia in 2016. She loves college football, exercising, baking, reading, and spending time with her young son.

Dr. Fred Reifsteck joined the staff at the health center in December 2003. From 1990-2001, he practiced at Kaiser Permanente in Jonesboro, Georgia. He was with the medical staff at The Doctor’s Office in Stockbridge from 2001-2003. Dr. Reifsteck is the Head Team Physician for the UGA Athletic Department and the lead physician in Medical Clinic Red/Sports Medicine at UHC.

Dr. Satya Thippareddi joined University Health Center in October 2017. After practicing as an Ob/Gyn in India for several years she relocated to the U.S. to complete a Family Practice Residency and has been certified by the American Board of Family Medicine continuously since 2006. She worked as a Staff Physician at The Nebraska Medical Center from 2007-2012 before moving to Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, where she worked until July 2017. She was active on a number of committees at both hospitals where she served as a member as well as chair–Utilization Review Committee, Peer Review Committee, Emergency Department Committee, and Obstetrics Committee—and was the medical director for the Diabetic Self-Management Program. Ms. Kimberly Brown-Clark joined the Health Center in 2001 as a Physician Assistant. She has over 26 years of healthcare experience, 18 of which have been in College Health. Kimberly has worked in various clinical settings to include Internal Medicine, Urgent Care, and Correctional Medicine. Her interests include Eating Disorders, Preventive Medicine, and managing hypertension through lifestyle modification and, when necessary, therapeutic intervention.
Kimberly is a “Power Trainer” on the University of Georgia Health Center’s electronic medical record. Kimberly trains all new mid-level providers, residents, and medical students. She is also a Safe Space Ally.

Dr. Chad Palmer joined the health center staff in April 2014. He completed a family medicine residency at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in 2008 and a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Washington in 2009. Dr. Palmer served as team physician for a number of colleges and high schools beginning July 2005, as well as for the Atlanta Falcons. He has practiced family medicine since 2009 and has been active in a number of community youth groups since 2001. Dr. Palmer also has special expertise and 14 years of experience working with diabetes.

Ms. Becky Badach joined the health center staff in 2006. In addition to being a certified physician assistant, she is a certified athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist. Before coming to UGA Becky worked as a PA in a small family practice office. She also was the head athletic trainer and instructor at a Division III college in New Hampshire.

Melanie Gibson is the Director of Information and Administrative Services at the health center and first joined the staff in 1994. She is a registered health information administrator and a member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). She earned her BS from University of Central Florida and her MBA at Brenau University. She serves as the privacy officer for the health center and serves on the advisory board at Athens Technical College for the Health Information Management Technology program.

Dr. John Leffert, Lead Dentist for the University Health Center’s Dental Clinic, has been on staff since 1999. He holds a BBA from UGA in marketing and a DMD from Medical College of Georgia. His areas of interest are endodontics and restorative dentistry.

Dr. Josh Zaleski joined the health center staff in 2011. He earned a BS in biology from the University of Georgia and DMD from Medical College of Georgia. He is a member of the American Dental Association and the Georgia Dental Association. Before coming to UGA he owned and operated a private practice outside of Atlanta. His special areas of interest are cosmetic dentistry, endodontics, and crowns and bridges.

Lori Tinnell came to UHC in 2009 with experience in clinical Microbiology, Infection Prevention/Employee Health, epidemiology, process improvement and State, OSHA & Joint Commission regulatory matters. She received her BS degree in Medical Technology from the University of South Alabama. She is currently responsible for the coordination of clinical laboratory services at UHC as they service student care, research and campus outreach diagnostic needs. Safe Space Ally.

Samantha Adair joined SCO’s staff as a case manager in 2021 and currently serves as the Assistant Director and Patient Navigator. She works within SCO and the University Health Center, and coordinates support for students who are navigating complex circumstances, assisting with connecting them to campus and community resources. Sam also manages the emergency support fund process to help provide direct financial assistance to students, along with collaborating with various offices on campus to assess and refine the management and distribution of support funds.
Sam holds a Master of Arts degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Georgia, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Georgia.

Elizabeth (Liz) Bonin joined the University Health Center in January 2024. A Georgia native, she graduated from University of Georgia before attending South University in Savannah for PA school. Prior to coming to UGA, Liz worked in Allergy and Immunology, Dermatology, Urgent Care and Primary Care settings. She is excited to bring her experience to student health at the UHC.

Hannah Craswell is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who joined the CAPS staff in 2019. She earned a BS degree in Psychology and MSW from the University of Georgia. Hannah serves as the Lead Behavioral Health Care Manager within the Gold Clinic, collaborating with other providers to offer comprehensive mental health care. She has prior experience in college mental health and in community nonprofit, working with adults and families experiencing housing instability and chronic disease. Hannah utilizes a variety of approaches: cognitive-behavioral, acceptance and commitment, and solution-focused therapies.

Ann has worked at UHC in both full and part time capacities since 2014. After serving in the US Air Force, she graduated with a BSN in 1996 and then obtained her Masters with her specialty as a Family Nurse Practitioner from MCG in 2002. Since that time, she has worked in various positions in the Athens community, including the Emergency Department at Athens Regional Medical Center and as an NP/First Assistant for Dr. Robert Cannon. Upon Dr. Cannon’s recent retirement, Ann returns to the Health Center in a full-time position after filling a PRN position for the past several years.

Mr. James Gibson joined the health center staff in 2020. Mr. Gibson has more than 30 years’ experience in Emergency and Family medicine and 20 years in Marine Corps rotary wing aviation. He is certified ACLS, BLS, PALs, and is a former Paramedic. His areas of interest are Emergency, Family, and Addictions medicine. He calls Athens home, having been a resident since 1973. Mr. Gibson’s interests include travel and photography.

Renildo Guimaraes (Rene) started his Massage Therapy education in Hong Kong in 1997 where he studied Reflexology, Aromatherapy, and Deep Tissue Massage. He also studied Thai Massage extensively in Bangkok, Thailand. Rene joined the Health Center staff as a Massage Therapist in 2007. Katrina Hardwick, a life-long Athenian, has been a Licensed Massage Therapist for over ten years and joined the UHC staff in the summer of 2019. Katrina graduated from Herzing College in 2008 with her Associate’s Degree in Applied Medical Science-Massage Therapy. She is certified by the Georgia Massage Therapy Licensing Board. Katrina is trained in a variety of techniques including: Thai, neuromuscular, therapeutic, relaxation, deep tissue, prenatal, and sports massage. Katrina enjoys connecting with people, helping to empower them with exercise, yoga, and stress-management strategies to help them to become their best self.

Stephen Hartle joined the University Health Center in November 2022. A Georgia native, he graduated from Kennesaw State University before attending NOVA Southeastern in Orlando for PA school. Caroline Hughes joined the UGA Health Center in September of 2022 as a Nutrition Counselor. She is a two-time UGA graduate who first graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics and later a Master’s in Nutritional Sciences. She then completed her Dietetic Internship at Medical University of South Carolina. Prior to her arrival at UGA, she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens. She specializes in eating disorders, diabetes, weight management, and medical nutrition therapy. In her spare time, she values spending time with her family and friends. Shannon is the Business Services Manager for the University Health Center. She received her B.S. from the State University of West Georgia in 1999 and became a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) in 2009. Shannon and her husband moved to Oconee County in 2004, and she joined the UHC staff in November of 2007, after working in the private medical sector for 7+ years. Among other duties, she is responsible for managing accounts receivable; oversight of medical billing; serving as a liaison with UGA Human Resources in managing the university student health insurance plan (SHIP); and coordinating UHC managed care in-network insurance operations.

Dr. Malone joined the University Health Center in April of 2024. He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 2005. Following graduation, he served in the US Navy as a nuclear trained submarine warfare officer for 6 years. After completing his required time in the military, he entered medical school and earned his MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He completed residency training at the Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in Sugar Land, Texas, where he served as Chief Resident. He is board certified in family medicine, and has worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense, providing care for military veterans, active duty soldiers, and their families. He also worked as a primary care physician at Pinehurst Medical Clinic in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He is excited to join UHC and apply this experience to prevent chronic illness and promote a healthy lifestyle early in life.

Michelle is the Business Services Assistant Manager for the University Health Center. She received her BS from the Medical College of Georgia in Dental Hygiene in 1983 and previously worked and acquired RDH licenses in Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. In addition, Michelle worked as a faculty member at MCG in Augusta in 1996. Michelle earned a Master of Business Administration from Augusta State University in 1990 and used her expertise in establishing and building a medical specialty practice in the private sector in Athens from 2000-2012. Michelle became part of the UHC family in 2014. Her responsibilities include credentialing and establishing network status with insurance companies, maintaining interactive communication and resolution of complaints with students and parents on billing issues, training new staff within the business services department, and auditing provider coding and documentation for accuracy and appropriateness.

Whitni McConnell first joined the University Health Center at UGA in 2016 as the Nutrition Education Coordinator. She is a former student- athlete and “Double Dawg,” having first graduated with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics and later a master’s degree in kinesiology. Prior to her arrival at UGA, she worked at Piedmont Athens Regional in Athens. She later resigned from UHC to support her spouse’s military career and went on to work in a neuro-medical long-term care facility. In February 2022, she joined the University Health Center again to provide virtual nutrition therapy to UGA students. Her areas of interest include sports nutrition, eating disorders and cardiovascular health. In her spare time, Whitni enjoys running, cycling, reading, cooking and spending time with family and friends.

Dr. Peggy Peterson is a physical therapist who joined UHC in 2023. After receiving her Doctor of Physical Therapy, she completed a yearlong Women’s Health Residency in Jacksonville, Florida, at the Brooks Rehabilitation Institute of Higher Learning. Her areas of interest include pelvic floor rehabilitation (including bowel, bladder, and sexual dysfunction), chronic pain, oncology rehabilitation, and ante- and post-partum care. She enjoys treating through a combination of manual therapy and movement-based treatment to help each individual patient meet their goals and to improve functional mobility and quality of life to promote health throughout the lifespan. Before going to school for physical therapy, since 2013, she has also been a certified athletic trainer, previously working at the collegiate level in the state of Alabama and Georgia with experience in sports-coverage for football, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, track & field, and tennis.

Suzanne Poole has been part of the pharmacy staff since 1999. She earned an Associates Degree from East Georgia College and a BSPharm from UGA. Before coming to UHC, she worked for Village Drug Shop in Athens and Tomlinson Pharmacy in Dublin, GA. Suzanne enjoys working in the health center pharmacy because of our commitment to counsel on every new prescription and to serving students.

With a background in medical device marketing and Fire/Rescue/EMS service, he brings experience from both the private and public sectors. Jackie Vaughn joined the UHC dental clinic as a hygienist in March 2023. She graduated with an Associate Degree of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene from Athens Technical College in 2006. She worked 16 years in private practice in before joining the University of Georgia. She loves educating her patients on ways to improve their oral health. One of her top priorities is making patients feel comfortable and at ease while in the dental chair.

Dr. Carol Wanna joined the UHC staff in 2023 after practicing obstetrics and gynecology for almost 30 years in California and Georgia. She worked in a private practice in Macon for 15 years. She was on faculty at Mercer University School of Medicine, teaching in the residency program as well as in the basic science curriculum.
