The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) is a diverse group of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at the University of Georgia who serve as a bridge between the student body and the University Health Center (UHC). SHAC members advocate for student well-being, provide feedback on health services, and help shape a campus environment that supports all aspects of student health.
SHAC represents the student voice in campus health matters. We promote open communication between students and UHC staff, provide input on health services and policies, and engage the campus community in health education, outreach, and advocacy efforts. .
• Act as student ambassadors for the Health Center, increasing knowledge of UHC operations and services.
• Participate in health education and outreach events.
• Provide feedback on policies and health-related initiatives and services.
• Promote a positive and open channel of communication between UHC staff and the student body, including occasionally serving on hiring committees for UHC professional staff.
• Contribute to campus-wide well-being initiatives.
• Increase knowledge of the mandatory health fee proposal process.
Additionally, each semester, SHAC develops and commits to various projects. These have ranged from collecting satisfaction survey data from students who visit the health center to distributing complimentary resources (i.e. sunscreen and traveling safety tips) to students during the safe spring break campaign.
SHAC members have developed and presented seminars to the entire health center staff, and served on other internal and external committees (Promoting Access to Total Health–internal; Campus Suicide Prevention Task Force–external) as student representatives. SHAC is just one of many factors that make the University Health Center a student-centered facility that truly offers excellence in college health care.
SHAC members may participate in one or more of the following subcommittees:
• Executive Board – Leads SHAC operations and represents the committee in official matters.
• Health Education & Outreach – Plans and promotes health-focused events and resources.
• Marketing & Communications – Manages SHAC branding, messaging, and social media.
• Advocacy & Access – Works to identify and address barriers to care.
• Policy & Assessment – Gathers student input and evaluates policies to improve UHC services.
SHAC is open to UGA students from all majors and backgrounds. Members are selected through an application process and are expected to:
• Attend monthly meetings (time TBD each academic year).
• Participate in SHAC events and initiatives.
• Serve for at least one academic year (two preferred).
• Remain active through graduation, if desired.
• Gain leadership and professional development.
• Build connections with peers and health center staff.
• Advocate for the health and well-being of UGA students.
• Contribute to a student-centered health experience on campus.
