Process For New Patients
- Incoming students, the allergy clinic is currently working on a new order form that must be filled out by your allergist. Please check the website in a few weeks. Thank you!

- Drop off your vials/orders in the Allergy Clinic or ask your allergy office to mail.

- The nurse will review all required forms and orders to ensure that your allergy shots are administered correctly. Once we have reviewed your paperwork, then you’ll receive a call and/or secure message to schedule your first appointment.

If you have any further questions, send an email to: allergytravel@uhs.uga.edu.
Allergy Shots
Allergy shots are a form of treatment called immunotherapy. Allergy shots contain just enough of the allergen to stimulate your immune system, and this helps get your body desensitized to the allergen. Over time, your doctor increases the dose of the allergen in each of your allergy shots. Your immune system builds up a tolerance to the allergen which causes your allergy symptoms to diminish over time. This form of long-term treatment generally takes 3-5 years to complete.

The Allergy Clinic at University Health Center administers allergy shots to eligible patients who have been established with an allergist, and are currently receiving immunotherapy (allergy shots). Injections are administered by a registered nurse who monitors the response, and provides education about signs, symptoms, side effects, and potential reactions. No allergy testing is done in the Allergy Clinic at UHC.
Service Animals
Service animals are restricted from the Allergy Clinic. Please see the UHC Service Animal Policy.
Fees and Insurance
Allergy patients will be charged a fee for each visit. This fee is not covered by the student health fee. Insurance will be filed at the time of service, and the patient will be billed for any charges that are not covered. Please refer to the UHC Insurance Information for more information.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I need to have allergy testing. Can I have it done in the Allergy Clinic at UHC?

No, you’ll need to make an appointment with an outside clinic that specializes in allergies and treatment.  There are local clinics in Athens, and many in the metro Atlanta area.

I’m having problems with seasonal allergies. Can I make an appointment to be seen in the Allergy Clinic?

No, the Allergy Clinic only sees those that are currently receiving allergy shots. However, you can make an appointment to be seen in your primary medical clinic.

What does the Allergy Clinic actually do?

The registered nurses in the clinic administer the allergy shots, provide education, and monitor for potential reactions.

What are the symptoms of allergies?

Runny nose, post nasal drip, itchy/watery eyes, headache, sneezing, congestion, and coughing are the most commonly associated symptoms.

Can you order my allergy extract when new vials are needed?

Yes. You will need to sign the allergy extract order form, as well as any other forms required by your allergist each time a new vial is ordered.

Can I just walk in and get my allergy shots?

No.  Allergy shots require an appointment so that the nurse can spend adequate time in reviewing your chart and orders.  This helps to ensure that your immunotherapy is administered correctly.

Can I make/cancel my appointment online?

Appointments in the Allergy Clinic can be cancelled online; however, you will need to call 706 542-5575 to make an appointment.

How long do I have to wait after receiving an allergy injection?

30 minutes is the mandatory wait time.

Where should my allergy vials be mailed?

Graduate in December = eligible through Spring semester

What is the process for a student with food allergies?

The student can register with the UGA Disability Resource Center and will need to schedule an appointment with the UGA Dining Services Registered Dietitian at 706-424-6773. The Registered Dietitian will give them a tour of the UGA dining commons, provide them with food allergen information for UGA dining commons menus, explain areas of potential cross-contact in the dining commons, and arrange chef-accommodations as needed.  Nutrition, food allergen, and ingredient information is available online on the “Build Your Plate” portion of the UGA Dining Services website: dining.uga.edu/locations/build-your-plate.  Bolton Dining Commons’ Special Selections line serves food free of gluten and the “top 8” food allergens (milk, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, peanuts, and tree nuts).  Oglethorpe Dining Commons does not serve peanuts or tree nuts on their menu or in their facility.
