Do not wait to get help
Do not wait to get help and call for medical attention immediately. Warning signs and symptoms of prescription drug overdose vary based on the individual and type of drug. Mixing prescription drugs with even small doses of alcohol and other substances is particularly dangerous as it can lead to permanent organ damage and even death.
Overdoses
After an overdose, follow up by seeking support resources. Free consultations are available at The Fontaine Center by calling 706-542-8690. If you need immediate medical attention or emergency response, do not wait and call 911.
Type of drugCommon signs and symptoms of an overdose
Opioids
(Examples like heroin, morphine, fentanyl, methadone, OxyContin)
• Breathing is very slow, or irregular, or they may not be breathing at all
• Fingernails and/or lips are blue
• Body is limp
• Deep snoring or gurgling sounds
• Loss of consciousness/passed out (can't wake the person up)
• Unresponsive (not answering when you talk to them or shake them)
• Pinpoint (tiny) pupils
Stimulants
(Examples like cocaine, speed, crystal meth, MDMA/ecstasy)
• Seizures
• Pressure and tightness in chest
• Foaming at the mouth
• Racing pulse
• Excessive sweating
• Vomiting
• Headaches/dizziness/ringing in the ears
• Hard time breathing
• Sudden collapse
• Loss of consciousness/passed out (can't wake the person up)
Hallucinogens
(Examples like acid, LSD, ketamine, magic mushrooms)
• Catatonic syndrome (person will be in a trancelike state)
• Psychosis (their reality is altered and may be having hallucinations or delusions)
• Nausea/vomiting
• Seizures

Withdrawl
Someone who stops taking some prescription medications after long term misuse or abuse can experience:

  • Increased anxiety
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Seizures
  • Medical Emergencies
Slowly decreasing use or tapering needs to be monitored by a doctor. If in need of immediate medical attention, call 911. The Fontaine Center can provide consultations to connect students with medical professionals to assist someone looking to stop prescription medication misuse or abuse by calling 706-542-8690.
