CAPS awarded accreditation by APA for its psychology intern program

November 26, 2024November 26, 2024 #beWellUGA

The University of Georgia’s Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) in the University Health Center (UHC) has been awarded accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA) for its psychology internship program, marking a significant milestone in UGA’s commitment to excellence in mental health training and services. This recognition affirms the CAPS program’s adherence to the highest standards in the field of psychology and establishes them as a leader in the development of future psychologists.

The APA accreditation process is the gold standard in the field of psychology, reflecting a program’s commitment to providing training that integrates research, practice, and ethical standards. Accreditation involves an exhaustive review process, including site visits, curriculum evaluation, and feedback from trainees and supervisors.

The APA accreditation enhances the university’s ability to attract top-tier graduate students seeking high-quality clinical training. Interns will gain hands-on experience delivering mental health services to a diverse student body while benefiting from rigorous supervision and innovative practices. With this accreditation, the program creates a pipeline of highly skilled psychology professionals who often remain in the area post-graduation. In addition, the University of Georgia joins a select group of institutions nationwide that provide accredited training programs. This contributes to the broader goal of standardizing clinical training across the country, ensuring that psychologists are equipped to meet evolving mental health challenges. By fostering the next generation of psychologists, CAPS contributes to addressing critical workforce shortages in mental health care, an issue of national concern.
