Orthotics and Physical Therapy
Orthotics are sometimes used in the treatment and prevention of many foot and related problems that can affect the ankle, knee, hip, and lower back. Orthotics can help to reduce the forces which cause excessive stress and pain in the body. They improve the alignment of the foot and leg so that these forces are re-directed to structures that can absorb them effectively. We use a customized flexible foot orthotic called Formthotics that are fitted and adjusted to suit:

  • Your individual foot.
  • The footwear in which they will be used.
  • The problem for which you are being treated.
The custom thermoformed orthotics provide a perfect fit between the soles of your feet and the insides of your shoes. They support your feet in a healthy, natural way and prevent abnormal pronation. Formthotics are used by medical professionals around the world to treat:

  • Foot and Leg Problems (fallen arches, aching, tired feet, heel pain, pain in the ball of the foot, corns, calluses, etc)
  • Sports Injuries (Achilles tendon pain, shin splints, knee pain, and hip pain)
  • Musculoskeletal Problems (back pain, myalgia, fibrositis, arthritis)
  • Diabetes. Prevention of foot ulcers by unloading pressure areas
Formthotics provide total contact stimulation to sensory nerve endings to improve reflexes, balance, and the posture of your body. The unique material cushions your feet and absorbs potentially harmful shock. Formthotics are manufactured from a unique type of Closed Cell Polyethylene foam that is inert, non-allergic, waterproof, lightweight, shock absorbing, and CFC-Free. They also contain Ultra-Fresh TM, the internationally proven anti-fungal/anti-bacterial agent, to actively maintain hygiene. Depending on your type and pattern of activity, they will normally last as long as, or longer than, the pair of shoes they are worn in.

Here in the UHC Physical Therapy Clinic, the physical therapist will choose from a variety of Formthotics to best meet your specific needs and shape them so that fit easily and comfortably into your shoe. Specifically, we have orthotics that are made for runners, dual density orthotics to assist help with shock absorption, as well as 3/4 length and low-profile orthotics which can be used in more of a "dress shoe". Following the initial break-in period, your therapist will monitor how you are doing with your orthotic inserts, and make any adjustments or changes as needed. If a patient needs something more short-term or less intrusive, we also provide heel lifts, rear and forefoot posts, as well as arch supports.

For questions, please call the Physical Therapy Clinic at 706-542-8634.
