It's against the law
Prescription medications are prescribed by a medical provider to specific patients for specific reasons at specific doses for specific amounts of time. As long as you stay in those parameters you can legally use a prescription medication. However, it is illegal to:

  • Use prescription medications without a prescription from a licensed medical provider
  • Share your medication with family or friends, even if they have the same condition or a prescription for the same medication
  • Use someone else’s medication
  • Alter or forge a prescription
  • Use more than prescribed
  • Use the medication for reasons other than what the medication was prescribed for
  • Carry the medication outside of the original container
  • Use the medication after the prescription has expired
  • Drive under the influence of prescription medications if the medication impacts a person's ability to drive safely
If you have any questions about the legal use of prescription medications, call the UHC Pharmacy at 706-542-9979.
Strategies to Prevent Prescription Medication Sharing
Be direct and say no if asked to share a prescription medication. Don’t hesitate to delegate and get others involved so you don’t have to navigate the situation alone:

  • "My doctor said I have to be really careful when taking this type of medication. If you are having a hard time, why don’t you set up an appointment with your doctor and see if they can help."
Distract and provide an alternative:

  • "I don’t share my medications but it sounds like you are pretty stressed out about the upcoming test. How about we study on Saturday instead."
  • Alternatives you suggest could be dependent on the specific situation or your relationship with the other person. Some possible options could include:
    • Going to a concert
    • Attend a sporting event
    • Start a study group
    • Attend classes and take notes
    • Go to a professor’s office hours
    • Watch a movie or grab dinner
    • Call and check in with the person
