Disposing of prescription medications
The safest way to dispose of unused or expired medications is to use a local drop box. There are three Athens area drop boxes: the UGA Police Department, the Clarke County Jail and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, or visit this interactive map for additional locations in Georgia.
Local police departments have a “no questions asked” policy to accept illegal drugs or prescribed medications in drop boxes.
Learn additional ways to safely dispose of prescription medications. Follow specific disposal instructions found on the label. Unless instructed to do so on the bottle, avoid flushing medications down the sink or toilet.
